smoke.

3.19.2012

The smoke swam slowly, twisting and turning upward. Not exactly toward anything. But rather away. Away from the fiery cherried end of a cigarette lodged between two dirty and motionless fingers, having yet been smoked. Avoiding the inevitable inhalation and thus, annihilation from the disastrous heap of a human that these fingers belong to. Up, further away from the girl that, more melted than laid, side up on the cold floor. Her heavy head cemented to her outstretched arm. Her breathe stagnant. Her eyes fixed, unblinking, just a few feet away, on the unopened envelope decorated with only her name.

I have been writing a lot lately. Its such a big part of me. Lately I have been wanting more of a challenge so I asked a friend of mine if he wanted to be my "writing buddy." He too had been wanting to do a little more with his writing. So we decided to choose some writing "assignments" and then share them with each other. The first time around we did 100 word assignments. We choose a prompt and can use only 100 words. No more, no less. This was one of mine and here is the other.

noun
1.
a folding, umbrellalike, fabric device for allowing a person, to float down safely through the air from a great height.

“But it’s hard to stay mad when there’s so much beauty in the world. Sometimes I feel like I’m seeing it all at once and it’s too much. My heart fills up like a balloon that’s about to burst. And then I remember to relax, and stop trying to hold on to it, and then it flows through me like rain and I can’t feel anything but gratitude for every single moment of my stupid little life.” — American Beauty
